Germany’s health and fitness industry continued its growth trend in 2013. Gym chains proved to be the main protagonist driving this trend and counted around 285,000 more members compared to individual studios. At the end of 2013 some 8.6 million people were members of a gym. “This means that one in ten Germans worked out at one of the 7,940 studios nationwide, which translates into an increase in memberships of 8.1 per cent on the year. However, despite this already high standard there is more potential for growth in the German fitness industry,” says Karsten Hollasch, Partner Corporate Finance and Head of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte in Germany.
The fitness industry is the fastest-growing sports segment in Germany. The number of members of studios with a surface area of more than 200 square metres soared from around 6.1 million in 2008 to 8.1 million in 2013, corresponding to a growth of 5.9 per cent each year.
