Seven Upper Iowa University student groups recognized by the governor for commitment to volunteering

FAYETTE, Iowa (July 1, 2013) - Seven Upper Iowa University student groups were honored at the 2013 Iowa Governor's Volunteer Awards ceremony recently for their contributions and involvement in the Fayette community and surrounding area.

Alpha Nu Omega, EYE, Phi Beta Delta and the Environmental Science Club were all nominated by the Iowa Department of Transportation for their consistent road side assistance. The students help maintain cleanliness of public areas and highways by picking up trash various times throughout the year.

UIU's Director of Student Leadership and Adventure Daryl Grove, along with Director of Student Activities Amy Tucker, nominated Beta Theta Omega for coordinating Women's Leadership Week, a staple program at Upper Iowa University for the past 11 years. The Peacock Men's Basketball Team and Women's Volleyball Team were also honored for its assistance and involvement with local youth and elementary schools.

"We are pleased to recognize these student groups," said Grove. "They truly deserve this honor for their efforts and participation in civic engagement."
