Upper Iowa University day camp gets kids fired up about computers and fossils

Day Camp younger group
Children in grades 1-4 tear apart computers as they learn how computers are made at the Upper Iowa University summer day camp held recently

FAYETTE, Iowa (June 24, 2013) – Fossils and robots may be on opposite ends of the world's timeline, but for 30 first- through ninth-graders, the two topics came together in a day-long educational summer camp sponsored by Upper Iowa University.

Divided into two groups, the campers spent half a day exploring geology, rocks and fossils with Dr. Kata McCarville, UIU associate professor of geosciences. They learned about the different minerals that make up Earth and discovered the three major rock types, igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Each student created a collection of common rocks and minerals, and collected their own samples of limestone as they walked along the trail near the Churbuck Prairie. In addition, they examined fossilized plants and quantified insect damage to the plants.

In the fifth- to ninth-grade section, the campers collected data on living plants and insect damage to the leaves, and compared their results from different plant species to the fossil plant results, and tested their hypotheses.

In the IT lab at Edgar Fine Arts Hall, both groups discovered what a computer is, while learning the interior parts of a computer. They also learned the binary language of a computer and how to translate English and numbers into binary to and from a computer. The campers assisted in programming and animation using 'Scratch' the cat and learned the basics of programming a robot to perform simple tasks using the Scribbler.

"Dr. McCarville and I really enjoyed assisting with last year's youth camp, that we decided to host a day camp this year between our departments," said Dr. Jim Jacobs, UIU assistant professor of information technology. "The kids really had a good time, and learned a lot about computers and the geosciences."

President Duffy and First Lady visit Upper Iowa University alumni in Sumner

Hillcrest Home Group Pic
President Bill Duffy and wife Sharon visited with Hillcrest Home, Sumner, residents and UIU alumni (from left) Cal Harms '48, Emma (Burkhart) Hough '26, Lorraine Creager '66, Sharon and Bill Duffy, Betty C. Hoth '64, Becky (Harms) Read '74, Almira Pease '31, and Lugene Treloar '71.

FAYETTE, Iowa (June 21, 2013) – Stories of campus and respected UIU professors filled the conference room at Hillcrest Home care center in Sumner, Iowa, this week. Seven Upper Iowa University School of Education alumni enjoyed fellowship and cupcakes as they reminisced and shared personal stories of their college years and their teaching years with President Bill Duffy and First Lady Sharon Duffy.

"We were honored to share the afternoon with these Upper Iowa alumni," said UIU President William R. Duffy II, Ed.D, Ed.S. "These people are the roots of our institution and have such a valuable history to share. They are the reason Upper Iowa University continues to be successful. For decades, these esteemed School of Education graduates imparted their knowledge in their classrooms and made a positive impact in many young lives. Sharon and I were overjoyed to spend time with them. Their stories will be a welcome addition to our UIU archive project."

Upper Iowa University is in the process of gathering alumni stories and memorabilia for the University archives on the Fayette campus.

Among the Hillcrest Home group was Upper Iowa's oldest living alumna, Emma (Burkhart) Hough '26, who is 108-years-old. A double-major in English and biology, Hough was active on campus and one year was the women's tennis tournament champion. With her new honor, she was selected to coach the team while still in college. Upon graduation, Hough was hired as a physical education teacher and head girls basketball coach in her hometown of Sumner. She also taught school in Ironwood and Manistee, Mich., before retiring in 1969. She and her husband, Charles, lived in New York City during the summers to attend Columbia University's master's program. A full article regarding Hough's adventures at Upper Iowa and beyond can be read on the University's blog, Peacock Tales, at http://uiupeacocktales.tumblr.com/.

Betty C. Hoth '64 shared stories of not only attending Upper Iowa, but welcoming many UIU student-teachers into her kindergarten classroom at Durant Elementary in Sumner, Iowa. She laughed as she recalled a UIU professor who would observe the student-teachers in the classroom. "He would sit right down on one of those little kindergarten chairs with the kids!" she said. "I guess he wanted to be right down with the kids to see what it was like to learn from the Upper Iowa student-teachers." Hoth says she keeps in contact with many of her former student-teachers, especially at Christmas time.

Hoth also said that one of the professors she enjoyed was Dick Clark, a 1953 UIU alumnus and history professor from 1959-1967. He served as a United States Senator from Iowa from 1973-1979 and later became an ambassador at large and United States Coordinator for Refugee Affairs. "He was a great teacher," Hoth recalled. "He has a brilliant mind."

Lorraine Creager '66 and Lugene Treloar '71 had similar stories to tell. After raising their families, both went back to school to earn their teaching degrees from Upper Iowa. Creager taught a number of years for the Tripoli Community School District, while Treloar taught in the Fredericksburg School District for 21 years.

President Duffy also visited with Cal Harms '48, Almira Pease '31 and Becky (Harms) Read '74.

Upper Iowa University launches drive to build sculpture and ceramics studio

UIU in 3D

FAYETTE, Iowa (June 21, 2013) - Upper Iowa University wants to add an extra dimension to its art program by establishing a free-standing studio in which students can create 3-D works of art. The sculpture and ceramics studio would be located immediately east of Edgar Fine Arts Hall on campus.

"Upper Iowa University wants to build on its already strong foundation in the arts and develop an adequate and safe space for constructing 3-dimensional art," said Elissa Wenthe, UIU assistant professor of art who came to the university in 2008 to teach ceramics and sculpture courses. "When UIU renovated Edgar Fine Arts in 2007, it wasn't designed for the scope of creating 3-dimensional artwork. When working in sculpture and ceramics, students saw, carve, weld, mix and formulate clay and glazes and do multiple different firing techniques with ceramic kilns. Such construction materials and methods require adequate space and ventilation. Our goal is to create a space that will give UIU students as much creative freedom as possible."

The University is launching a special alumni fund-raising initiative, "UIU in 3-D" to raise $500,000 to finance the removal of the existing structure, construction of the studio, and site landscaping. This initiative is similar to other recent single-purpose alumni funding initiatives, such as "Raising the Bar" and "The Clark-Bowen Endowed Scholarship Fund." The "Raising the Bar" initiative was established to raise $250,000 to pay for improvements in strength and conditioning facilities for Peacock athletes. More than $113,000 has been raised to date. The "Clark-Bowen Endowed Scholarship Fund," honors UIU Vice President Charles Clark and Registrar Roger Bowen who were instrumental in launching the UIU independent study program 40 years ago. To date, more than $32,000 has been raised.

"This drive is a great opportunity for alumni, who benefitted from a UIU fine arts education, and art lovers everywhere to show their support for the future of the University's art program," Wenthe said.

More information about the program is available online at www.uiu.edu/3d. Additionally, several member of this year's Team Peacock are raising funds for this initiative. Team Peacock's fund-raising web page can be found at http://www.uiu.edu/teampeacock/.

Upper Iowa University professor confirms identity of 20,000-year-old mastodon tooth in rural Sumner, Iowa

Mastodon Kids CreekStanding in the creek at the exact location of where they found a 20,000-year-old mastodon tooth are (front, left) Chase Redfern, 11, and Brynlee Volker, 10; and (back, left) Michael Koch, 12, and Brylie Volker, 12.

FAYETTE, Iowa (July 3, 2013) – With numb feet, four friends worked diligently to build a dam on a meandering creek just west of the Volker family farm in rural Sumner, Iowa. They were hoping to make a swimming hole to give them and their siblings respite on a hot June day. Half-way through their project, Chase Redfern tugged on a large stick in the creek bed. He pulled hard, dislodging the stick and something else – something rare.

Up to his knees in the cold water, Redfern lifted the object from the sandy bottom. His friends, Michael Koch of Fredericksburg, Iowa, and Koch's cousins, Brylie and Brynlee Volker, rushed over to see what it was. Clambering onto the banks, the group ran to the Volkers' yard with their prize. Koch's dad thought maybe it was petrified wood, while the kids thought it was a tooth belonging to a carnivorous dinosaur.

Turns out the kids were half right. Dr. Katherine McCarville, Upper Iowa University associate professor of geosciences, confirmed it was indeed a tooth – a mastodon tooth. While the kids thought it was a pointy tooth indicative of a carnivore, they actually needed to turn it right side up to see that it was the molar of a mastodon that could have died some 20,000 years ago.

"There were many different kinds of elephants in North America during the past few million years, including mammoths, mastodons, four-tuskers and others," said McCarville. "The last of these died out about 12,700 years ago in the Great Pleistocene Extinction, which may have been driven by climate change, overhunting or diseases, or some combination of factors. The animal Chase found would have lived perhaps 20,000 years ago, during the most recent of the Ice Age glaciations that affected Iowa.

"(The tooth that Chase found) is quite a nice specimen. Because the tooth is complete and unworn by transport in a river, there might be additional remains of this animal near where they found the tooth."

The kids have already been out in the creek looking for more, although it's been tough. Heavy rains and the weeds along the banks have stymied their progress.

Upper Iowa University currently has a partial mastodon jaw that was found near West Union, Iowa. There have been several mastodon remains discovered in Iowa and Illinois, according to McCarville.

Art students from Upper Iowa University create mural for Prairie View

art studentsart mural students
At left: UIU student Troy Parker explains his vision for the mural painted by UIU students at Prairie View Residential Care to Robin Martin of Prairie View, and fellow students Dylan Langerman-Aten, Fayette, and Elizabeth Roenecker, Maynard . The mural creates "stained glass windows" for residents of the facility. At right: UIU art students involved in the project included Travis Huckins, Maynard; Lesley Codd, Belize; Langerman-Aten; and Wisconsin students Maria Linhart and Nikk Boggs.

FAYETTE, Iowa (May 20, 2013) – Art class at Upper Iowa University has been teaching more than brush strokes this spring term. Students in the "Painting" course created a mural for Prairie View Residential Care in Fayette.

"Everything aligned for the class this spring. Not only were we able to focus on the process and techniques of painting, but we also were able to focus on how to extend what we were doing in class to the greater world; and that is that is when the class really heated up," said John Siblik, associate professor of art and interim dean of the UIU School of Liberal Arts. "Robin Martin of Prairie View contacted us to find out if we were interested in doing a mural at the facility. The Art Club had recently completed a mural in nearby Clermont as well as a mural for the North Fayette Middle School; so the word was out -- the UIU Art Department is serious about working with the community in our surrounding area."

Siblik said UIU mural work was also a byproduct of the recent visit of artist Sharon De La Cruz, a muralist and activist from New York City. De La Cruz worked with UIU students to complete a mural project that focused on the environment.

"Sharon inspired our students in the painting class to work in innovative ways and get involved in the community," Siblik said.

Troy Parker, a junior art and graphic design major from Australia, took the lead on the Prairie View project and submitted design ideas to Sylvia Mork, Prairie View Management administrator and CEO. From there, a color scheme was developed and the layout of the mural began. UIU students worked on the mural over the course of several weeks.

"The students wanted to transform a long hallway at the facility, which was becoming more than a place to pass through and more of a place where residents congregate and talk," Siblik explained. "The mural acts like windows of stained glass where the imagination can wonder, linger and ponder."

"Upper Iowa University is an asset and resource to our community," Mork said. "This project has enriched the lives of our clients, visitors and staff. It has been a win-win situation, and I hope it will be the beginning of many projects that we can work on together with UIU art students."

Central Louisiana Technical Community College and Upper Iowa University sign partnership to help students continue college education

CLTCC signing
Administrators sign an articulation agreement between Central Louisiana Technical Community College (CLTCC) and Upper Iowa University (UIU) to help CLTCC students more easily complete bachelor's degrees. Signing on were (from left) Chief Academic/Student Affairs Officer Carol Hebert and Chancellor Dr. Rodney Ellis from CLTCC, and Wayne Converse, director of military affairs and business development, and Meredith Lachney, admissions advisor from UIU.

ALEXANDRIA, La. (June 13, 2013) -- Central Louisiana Technical Community College, Alexandria, and Upper Iowa University, which has its primary campus in Fayette, Iowa, have affirmed a partnership to provide a course-by-course articulation agreement that allows for a seamless transfer process for learners at CLTCC who want to further their education through Upper Iowa University.

Upper Iowa University has a location for teaching courses at the Learning Center for Rapides Parish in Alexandria.

"We consider UIU to be a great option for a four-year university in the Alexandria area, and this partnership further solidifies our commitment to the Rapides Parish and to CLTCC students," said Wayne Converse, director of military affairs and business development at Upper Iowa University. "This partnership is not only important for the two institutions but, more importantly, for our students."

"Our goal is to help all students access an affordable degree program at Upper Iowa University," said UIU President William R. Duffy II, Ed.D, Ed. S. "We are committed to partnerships like this to help us serve the educational needs of students. We look forward to working closely with students from CLTCC."

Upper Iowa University has been offering classes in Alexandria since 2005. On-site classes are taught in the evenings and are offered in eight-week terms. For more information, visit www.uiu.edu/alexandria.

"We look forward to working with Central Louisiana Technical Community College as this partnership allows us to further educate and meet the demands of Central Louisiana's non-traditional adult students," added Meredith Latchney, admissions advisor at the UIU-Alexandria center.

Central Louisiana Technical Community College is comprised of six campuses and serves about 1,600 students each semester as part of Louisiana's post-secondary technical education system. The Louisiana Community and Technical College System is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), with the CLTCC offering 36 programs.

Seven Upper Iowa University student groups recognized by the governor for commitment to volunteering

FAYETTE, Iowa (July 1, 2013) - Seven Upper Iowa University student groups were honored at the 2013 Iowa Governor's Volunteer Awards ceremony recently for their contributions and involvement in the Fayette community and surrounding area.

Alpha Nu Omega, EYE, Phi Beta Delta and the Environmental Science Club were all nominated by the Iowa Department of Transportation for their consistent road side assistance. The students help maintain cleanliness of public areas and highways by picking up trash various times throughout the year.

UIU's Director of Student Leadership and Adventure Daryl Grove, along with Director of Student Activities Amy Tucker, nominated Beta Theta Omega for coordinating Women's Leadership Week, a staple program at Upper Iowa University for the past 11 years. The Peacock Men's Basketball Team and Women's Volleyball Team were also honored for its assistance and involvement with local youth and elementary schools.

"We are pleased to recognize these student groups," said Grove. "They truly deserve this honor for their efforts and participation in civic engagement."
