Upper Iowa University student, Evan Knowlton from Sioux City graduated with a bachelor's degree in sports communication. He was one of six students selected to address the UIU Class of 2013 commencement ceremonies May 11.
FAYETTE, Iowa (May 14, 2013) – After encountering a tractor in the car wash and a goat on the highway, Evan Knowlton says he learned to treasure his "only in Fayette" experiences. Knowlton, a graduate of Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, was one of six Upper Iowa University students chosen to speak to the UIU Class of 2013 during commencement exercises Saturday, May 11.
"To me, only in Fayette and at Upper Iowa University will you see the level of respect and support from faculty and staff. Only in Fayette will you meet an entire group that is so close and family-oriented...and becomes part of your family. Only in Fayette will you have the opportunity to meet the local people. Everyone knows each other and is sure to greet you with a wave and a smile," Knowlton said. "We have grown together in the last few years...and we will never truly be apart."
Knowlton graduated with a bachelor's degree in sports communication. He played Peacock football and wrote for the UIU student newspaper, The Collegian. He belongs to both the Alpha Chi National Honors Society and Lambda Pi National Communication Association Honors Society. He is returning to Sioux City where he will work in admissions at Bishop Heelan High School and coach baseball.
Upper Iowa University has 19 U.S. off-campus education centers, a traditional residential campus in Fayette, international centers in Hong Kong and Malaysia, as well as an extensive online program and an independent study program. About 2,000 students who completed their associate, bachelor or master degrees through these UIU offerings graduated in the UIU ceremonies. Of those, 700 graduated from the Fayette location, more than 1,000 completed their degree at a U.S. center, 500 graduated through online or independent study programs, and 250 were from the international centers. UIU is one of the most diverse universities in Iowa. In all, the graduates represented 36 states and 14 nations.
