Success is par for the course for Upper Iowa University graduate

Jake Newman

Jake Newman, who completed his bachelor's degree in applied plant science, was one of six UIU graduates to address the Class of 2013 commencement ceremonies at Upper Iowa University May 11.

FAYETTE, Iowa (May 14, 2013) – Knoxville, Iowa, native Jake M. Newman was one of just six Upper Iowa University students selected to speak during the UIU Commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 11.  And that's pretty much par for the course for Newman, who received his bachelor's degree in applied plant science and who will begin a career in turf management at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines.

A transfer student from Kirkwood Community College, Newman worked part time for the grounds department at Upper Iowa and worked on the athletic fields and putting green on campus.  In addition, he completed three internships in turf grass management and received the UIU Mott Transfer Scholarship, UIU Thomas Parker Goebel and Helen Goebel Scholarship, the Iowa Turfgrass Institute Scholarships, and the Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Association Scholarships.  He was part of a team that placed at the Sports Turf Managers Association Student Challenge earlier this year.

Newman said Upper Iowa University taught him to challenge himself, learn from mistakes, and seize opportunity.

"I hope that as we all leave Upper Iowa University and move on to other endeavors, we can all recognize opportunities when they present themselves and not just let them pass by.  Even though I know I have missed many, I made my education at UIU what I wanted and learned from opportunities and struggles, inside and outside of the classroom." Newman said.

A graduate of Knoxville High School, he is the son of Wesley Newman, Sr., and Susie Newman.

Upper Iowa University has 19 U.S. off-campus education centers, a traditional residential campus in Fayette, international centers in Hong Kong and Malaysia, as well as an extensive online program and an independent study program.  About 2,000 students who completed their associate, bachelor or master degrees through these UIU offerings graduated in the UIU ceremonies.  Of those, 700 graduated from the Fayette location, more than 1,000 completed their degree at a U.S. center, 500 graduated through online or independent study programs, and 250 were from the international centers.  UIU is one of the most diverse universities in Iowa.  In all, the graduates represented 36 states and 14 nations.
