In Amsterdam the fate of the Jewish girl Anne Frank is being staged in a theatre built specifically for the purpose. The play is the first to be based on the original text of the diary of Anne, who was born in Frankfurt/Main and who would have been 85 this year. She wrote her world-famous diary between 1942 and 1944 in the family’s hiding place in a building in a rear courtyard in Amsterdam. In 1944, the family was betrayed and deported to concentration camps. In 1945, Anne Frank died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The world premiere of the play “Anne” will be on 8 May, and there are plans for it to be staged in other counties. The Anne Frank Fund in Basle holds the rights to the diary. It commissioned the Dutch writing couple Jessica Durlacher and Leon de Winter to write the play.
